Here's the schedule for the 2011 Decatur Book Festival Author Events hosted by the Blue Elephant Book Shop staff at The Old Courthouse on the Square in Decatur. Below you will find links to the authors, detailing the time of their events as well as information about publications.

We will also host a separate event with The Big Book of Christian Mysticism author Carl McColman on Sunday at the First Christian Church of Decatur. We will have the books of our authors available for sale. Come visit us!

 

SATURDAY

On The Cusp of Rainy Country 10AM - 10:45AM

Two great poets reading from, and in conversation together about, their work.

 

Voices From The Underground: Speckled Birds and Smoking Typewriters 11:15AM - 12PM

Founding staff members of the Atlantan counterculture newspaper The Great Speckled Bird are joined by John McMillian to discuss the impact of underground presses and the work that they generate.

The Real James Bond Was a Woman 12:30PM - 1:15PM

The author shares her newest book, and what went into its creation.

 

The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities: Exhibits, Oddities, Images, and Stories from Top Authors and Artists 1:45PM - 2:30PM

Acclaimed scifi & fantasy editor Ann VanderMeer discusses what went into the creation of The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities, a fantastic anthology with steampunk elements that's become a cult classic hit.

 

The Bible Now 3PM - 3:45PM

Richard Friedman discusses what the Hebrew Bible says or does not say about a wide range of issues--including homosexuality, abortion, women's status, capital punishment, and the environment.

Fiona Zedde discusses her work, and what went into its creation.

 

Poets In Conversation 5:30PM - 6:15PM

A conversation between poets that explores much more than what ends up printed on the page.

How Writing Heals: The Power of Words at Work in Your Life 12PM - 12:45PM

Brenda Stockdale reads from and discusses the journey to the creation of her book.

 

Teen Protagonists in Grown Up Fiction 1:15PM - 2PM

Meg Howrey and Jesmyn Ward discuss their adult books featuring teenage main characters.

 

Lillian Smith Award 2:30PM - 3:15PM

Winners of the 2011 Lillian Smith Book Awards will be announced to honor outstanding Southern writing that furthers social justice.

 

Southern Family Drama 3:45PM - 4:30PM

Anna Jean Mayhew and Patricia Sprinkle read from and discuss the creation of their novels involving women faced with the choice of following their own path or obeying their family.

 

Is There a Queer Eye? 5PM - 5:45PM

Join these presenters for a spirited conversation about art, poetry and philosophy from a queer perspective. They will entertain the notion that being lesbian/gay/bi/trans/queer offers a unique perspective on the world we live in.
