Girl in Hyacinth Blue
Susan Vreeland
This story gives "provenance" human faces as you follow the painting backwards to Vermeer's brush.

Serena
Ron Rash
George and Serena Pemberton are the type of people who believe that their social and economic status afford them the right to do whatever they want with no repercussions. I did not realize how affected I was by these characters until I found myself wishing that they would finally get their comeuppance. I chose this book as one of my favorites of 2008.

Bridge of Birds: A Novel of Ancient China That Never Was
Barry Hughart
Bridge of Birds is wonderful—the most underrated genre novel of the past thirty years. The exploits of Master Li and Number Ten Ox are thrilling, hilarious, and wryly human. This book will break your heart AND deliver a gloriously happy finale.
