Good Poems
selected and introduced by Garrison Keillor
This is a collection of poetry for your whole life, organized into sections about lovers, everyday life, snow, the color yellow, and resurrection, with verses written by everyone from W.B. Yeats and W.H. Auden to Billy Collins and Robert Hass. Garrison Keillor selected these verses from among the thousands read on NPR's The Writer's Almanac, and they are rich poems indeed, the kind of poetry you can sink your teeth into.
From Head to Toe
by Eric Carle
A great children's book to get everyone moving around and giggling. Kids will soon be kicking, wriggling, clapping and stomping along with the animals of From Head to Toe, which is illustrated in Eric Carle's distinctive style.
The Master & Margarita
by Mikhail Bulgakov
Bulgakov's Master & Margarita takes us on a hilarious and irreverent tour of Stalin era atheist Russia. When Satan comes to town bringing his minions, including a man sized talking black cat named Behemoth, he wreaks havoc on the "order" imposed by the ridiculously oppressive government bureaucracy. I loved the vividly imagined characters, the bizarre and fantastical twists of fate, and the comical clashes when Satan visits a populace convinced he doesn't exist.
The Elements of Style
by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White
A treasure for word lovers, readers and writers alike, this little book is full of dry wit and blunt instructions. Don't be fooled by it's grammar book title, it's an amusing read and will leave you with a greater appreciation for the art and craft of sentence building.
